White Sari Blue PJ's
By Heather Greaves of Body Therapies Yoga Training
It’s 1990 and I stand amongst other well wishers wearing a white sari. It’s a celebration of sorts. Another year of existence for this special meditation center growing in the island paradise, Barbados. The Raja Yoga meditation center has roots far away in Rajasthan, India. White fabric is the color of choice for most people at this gathering; a symbol of renunciation and purity. The style of clothing here in this tropical island is the typical British wear: shirt, skirt, pant, and dress, often colourful. At some point, the shirtjack was introduced in the Caribbean; the shape and style of a jacket with the fabric of a shirt. Sometimes, it's quite fancy with embroidery. It’s practical apparel for men. And so, for whom is this wear costume, and for whom is it clothing? So, why am I, this local Bajan (a Barbados national) woman wearing a sari, and a white one at that? Is this authentic or plagiarized? What influences choice of clothing? Is it peer pressure, organizational standards, cultural bonding, or time and place? And for whom is it costume, and for whom is it clothing? Fast forward almost 20 years to a different time and place. It’s evening in Ontario. I sit in front of the computer in blue pajamas, comfy blue pj’s. In whose mind would the thought arise: is it costume or clothing?
